Why Buy Australian?

We are very often asked by the media and our customers why we believe it is so important to buy Australian. While the answer is both straight forward and simple we find most people are shocked to find out that 85% of the products in the average Australian grocery trolley are made by foreign owned companies. This results in $100 million a day going outside Australia! Now we all now facts like these can often be stated for shock value, however, when comparing Australia with Japan in this context the result is even more shocking - 98% of goods in Japan's supermarkets are owned by Japanese organisations.

There are two key reasons to support Australian owned companies – profits stay in Australia and jobs are created for Australians. Sounds simple doesn't it? Well it is even more simple if  consider this - if every Australian redirects $10 per week from foreign owned companies and foreign made items to Australian products, Australia would save $4 billion per year and create 100,000 new jobs. Foster's Sale to SAB Miller - A Sad Day!

Vegemite gone, Bonds gone, Aeroplane Jelly gone, Tim Tam gone and now the iconic Australian Beer company Fosters is set to be sold to a foreign company. The 150 year old Melbourne based brewer has accepted a takeover bid from British beer giants SAB Miller.

What does this ultimately mean?

The iconic Australian VB, Crown, Cascade and Carlton Draught beer brands will be foreign owned.

What could this potentially mean?

Loss of Australian jobs by moving production offshore. This is a real possibility, after all this is what Qantas is doing.

Iconic Aussie Brands Are Foreign Owned

When we talk about the fact that over 85% of products in a typical supermarket trolley are either imported from overseas or owned by overseas companies people find it hard to believe.

A great example of this is the growing list of iconic Aussie brands being sold to foreign owned companies. This means that the profits from the sale of these products are shipped off-shore. Often this also means that production goes off-shore in search of cheaper alternatives. The cheaper production unfortunately does not lead to lower prices for us but more profits for these foreign owned companies.

The list we could show you goes on and on so we decided to just name a few:

Vegemite - Kraft Foods (USA)

Uncle Tobys - Nestle (Switzerland)

Dairy Farmers, Dare Iced Coffee, Oak, Moove - Kirin Holdings (Japan)

P&N, Frantelle, Waterfords - Asahi Breweries (Japan)

Cottees Cordials - Cadbury Schweppes Plc (UK)

Bundaberg Sugar - Societe Financiere des Sucres s.a. (Belgium)

Arnott's Biscuits (Tim Tam) - Campbell Soup Company (USA)

Peters - Nestle (Switzerland)

Allens Lollies - Nestle (Switzerland)

Aeroplane Jelly - McCormick & Co Inc (USA)

Our prices compared to high street?

On a recent visit to a local deli I found a beautiful range of products and I was very pleased to see shelves filled with local Australian producers products. I was also very surprised when I started looking at prices. Whisk & Pin's fabulously tasty and fresh range of muesli's were retailing at around $15.99 - $16.99 compared to $12.50 - $13.50 on our website. Simply Stirred dressings were retailing at around $12.99 compared to $9.99 on our website.

You might ask why our prices are lower and the answer is simple...being an online retailer we are operating on a lower cost business model. Our warehouse rent is lower than that of a retail shop front and our employee costs are also lower. These cost savings we are able to pass onto you!

This is well worth considering next time you are trying to decide whether the $13.00 delivery fee is worth it or not. This fee is a small price to pay for convenience!

Bartholomews Meadery - Another Champion Producer!

Bartholomews Meadery has won the Champion Exhibit for their Honey in the Royal National Honey Show - the premier honey show in Australia.

Honey_WA

They received the Phillip Carter Annual Trophy and Sash for this win (very nice it is too!!)

What makes their Honey so special you might ask?

The honey is produced from their own hives, which are moved constantly to chase the flowers on natural spray free virgin bush land, with no cultivated crops being used.

Each honey is produced from a specific variety of plants.  As such the production is limited and seasonal.

The hives are kept in a tight radius around Bartholomews, surrounded by some of the most pristine and unspoiled forests in Australia, with magnificent old growth timber, and world class beaches.

The honey returns to the meadery in frames, and is extracted using a centrifuge.

It is poured by hand in jars.

It is unprocessed and pure, just the way it should be.

We currently have three varieties:

Wandoo Honey Jar $9.50

Karri Honey Jar $9.99

Moort Honey Jar $9.50
